Best Backpacking Boots For Men

Introduction

Backpacking is an outdoor activity that involves carrying gear on one’s back and hiking for several days. It’s a very long hiking trip and you want to plan your journey very carefully. Therefore, you need a good equipment and very good solid backpacking boots.

There are countless backpacking boots in the footwear markets and it can be frustrating to select the best one. I want to make your life easy by showing you some of the best backpacking boots for men. These backpacking boots I have listed in this post are based on bestselling, high reviews and popularity.

Before, I show you guys the best backpacking boots, I’m going to outline some criteria that you can use to help you select the best backpacking boots in the future. With that being said, let’s get right into it.

How To Choose The Best Backpacking Boots

Comfort: If you are going to do backpacking which in essence hiking for several days then you want to have a boot that is super comfortable. Having a good boot will make the journey very smooth and reduce your chances from getting blisters or sore.

Waterproof and Breathability: This is another element you want to consider when buying backpacking boots. You want the boot to have either Gore-Tex membrane or some sorts of proprietary waterproofing. This will help your feet stay dry in case it rains as you are hiking. And at the same time keep your feet breathable.

Very good Outsole: Since you are going to be hiking for days and dealing with all kinds of terrains. You want to have a good and rugged outsole. This rugged outsole should have strong lugs to be able to grip the terrains so that you don’t end up slipping or falling. Having a good outsole will also give you a good balance on the trails.

Midsole and Insole: Off course you want to look at the midsole and insole of the boot as well. You want a midsole and insole that delivers excellent cushioning and support.

Steady and Strong Boot: You want to look for boots that are very steady and strong. This way you can deal with any sorts of conditions you face on the trails such as mud, pond, debris and so fore. Therefore, you want to look for boots that are either low cut or mid cut boot.

If you manage to get boots that are either low cut or mid cut, then you will have no issues with dealing with any-thing that comes on the trails.

Fit and Size: If you are going to hike for days, you don’t want to wear a boot that does not fit you properly. Either it’s too tight or too big for your feet. You want to get the boot that fits your feet perfectly. My advice to you is, before you purchase the boot try them for a few minutes and see if it’s fits your feet perfectly.

If it does fit your feet perfectly, then you have the green light to purchase it. If not, then it’s not wise to buy them because you are going to have a tough time on the trails.

Ankle Support and Toe Box: As I said earlier, backpacking trips takes days and therefore you want good cushioning and support. When buying your boot, you want to consider looking at the ankle support, and toe box. A good ankle support will place your ankle in a perfect position whiles you hike and give you nice cushioning.

A good and solid toe box will reduce the chances of you getting a serious injury on your toe when you hit against a rock for an example.

Durability: Since backpacking takes days or sometimes a week. You want to buy boots that are durable. And the way to see if a boot is durable is to look at the materials or leather used. Full-grain leather is a good example of a leather that can last for a long time.

Now that we have outlined the criteria in choosing the best backpacking boots. It’s time to present you with the best backpacking boots for men in the market.

I want to end this review with one of Lowa’s backpacking boots and it’s called Lowa Sesto Mid. The boot is made with split synthetic leather upper to give you nice texture when you wear the boot. The fun thing about this material is how it makes the boot lightweight.

  1. I love hiking, and could never find the right shoes or boots. I avoided boots in general, because I found them rather uncomfortable. I use shoes instead, which is also a problem gripping the ground.

  4. This is a great article and I like all of the points you make. You showed some good models but I usually stick with the lightweight ones for maximum comfort.

Comfort is very important for me, it can get painful walking a lot if the boots don’t fit good and aren’t confortable. As long as it’s the right size and has some good bend or flex then I’m usually satisfied.

2 other good points you make are about Waterproof and Breathability. You never know when you will step in a puddle or stream so it’s best to play it safe and get good ones. I like the breathability point because sometimes it gets hot out there so again, better to play it safe.

Thanks for sharing and do you do a lot of hiking? It sure is a good hobby to build strength and mellow out too.

    • Hello Tom,

Thanks for the compliment. If you enjoy wearing lightweight boots then you will love my post on them. Please check it out here.

You are right on the point Tom. Comfort, waterproof and breathability are all essential factors you need to consider when buying a hiking boot. Without them, you are going to have a tough time on the trails. That’s why I encourage hikers to look for these features before they buy the boot.

I really love hiking and I shared one of my hiking trip in this review. It’s just incredible to see how amazing nature is. What about you, do you hike often?

Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  5. Hello Kuu,

I love hiking; personally I find backpacking too exhausting. I like your list of backpacking boots, it’s very compressive and easy to compare the models and make a decision.

I have a question related to fit and size. If the boots fit perfectly, I wonder if they will not cause pains when the feet are swollen. What are your thoughts?

Looking forward to hearing your answers.

    • Hi Dany,

Lovely to hear from another avid hiker. Haha 😉 I understand where you are coming from Dany. Backpacking can be a very tiring journey that’s why you got to make sure that you are fit and have the right equipment.

Good question Dany. Personally speaking, boots that fit your leg perfectly wouldn’t cause your leg to swollen or cause you pains. It could happen if the boot tight your feet too much.

Also, when you have a swollen feet, I wouldn’t encourage you to wear hiking boots because it could make the pain worse. It’s better to recover first and then wear the boot.

I hope you find these answers useful. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  7. Hello Kuu,

I personally spend much of my time in the Forrests areas in and around Germany as there is just so much to explore and it really rejuvenates my spirit. Having the right footwear in my opinion is just about the same importance if not more important than warm or wet weather gear.

There are a number of products reviewed on your post but are these products universal to the type of terrian for instance rocks, snow or mud? This will greatly assist in making the right selection.

    Rich

    • Hello Richard,

I love how you spend your time in the forests areas in and around Germany. That’s one of the benefits of hiking or spending quality time in nature.

I agree with you. Having the right hiking boots are very essential. They will make your journey very smooth. Yeah these backpacking boots are universal to the type of terrain.

I hope this answer allows you to make the right decision in selecting the product you need. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  11. Hello kuu,

I have had the same old Merrell hiking for several years now and never even considered needing new ones until I read your post.

Looking at what is out there now and how far the technology has come. I am sure that a new pair will make my hiking experiences more enjoyable.  But I think I will stick with Merrell though.

    • Hey Remy,

  12. The more I read the better the Salomon X ALP MID LTR GTX’s are looking. Although, I don’t buy hiking boots for myself or, others just for looks. These are so highly rated for performance as well as their striking good look. I am also a huge fan of the angle at the mouth of this boot and the reinforced toe!

I do have a question though. What is ‘nubuck leather’?  It’s a term I haven’t heard before. I was also wondering why you aren’t a big fan of this type of leather.  Does it degrade too easily?

    • Hey Frye,

It’s great to see that you really like the Salomon X ALP MID LTR GTX. There is no doubt that the design and used colours used are very attractive.

Nubuck leather are a top-grain leather which is normally made from cattle leather that has been sanded or buffed on the grain side.

The reason why I don’t personally like this leather is because it gives me a weird feeling on my feet. In order words, it makes my feet uncomfortable. Hope this answer helps.

Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  13. First, I like to thank you for this wonderful review on all these hiking boots. And, I have to say it can’t get any better as you have detailed everything there is.

I am looking for quite some time for good and secure hiking boots and I have such a hard time to find the right model fitting for me.

I have, let’s say, super sensitive feet and actually it doesn’t matter even what the price point are since I had some bad experiences in the past with cheap models as well with the more expensive kind.

I also don’t like to spend days of trying on random hiking boots which can be really exhausting, to say the least.

I have printed your page, using it as a reference point, and checking out those who are more suitable for me.

Thank you for all the work you have put in and for sharing. 🙂

  17. Hey, the article is really helpful for me and I have learnt a lot about backpacking men’s boots. I used Vasque St. Elias GTX in the last year and it serves me great except one issue. It hurt my toe and it could be the reason of size. However, before buying a hiking boot for my wife, I surfed on Internet to ensure that the boot won’t hurt her legs and will provide extra comfort. Finally she chose a pair from this site. She is happy with her purchase.

    • Hello Spencer,

I’m thrilled to hear that you found this article useful. It’s nice to hear your experience with the Vasque St. Elias GTX.

Maybe you probably bought the wrong size for your foot like you said. Maybe a larger one will have suit you much better.

Choosing a hiking boots to buy can be a big challenge especially when you are buying it for someone. But you did the right thing by taking the time to look through the internet for the best.

You can check out this post of mine, where I show you how to select the best hiking boots before buying them.

I’m superb happy 😊 that your wife found her desired hiking boots.

Merry Christmas and have a fantastic hiking trip.
