The Danner Mountain 600 is a hiking boot that has become very popular in the hiking industry for the last few years. It was even nominated in the Outdoor Awards in 2017. This boot is described by Danner as ‘explore beyond the familiar’.
This is an indication from Danner Boots that, this boot is capable of dealing with all sorts of terrain and weather condition. This boot is designed with a lot of high quality materials that makes the boot suited for hiking or even mountaineering.
The features include Suede Upper, Danner Dry, Vibram® SPE Midsole, Vibram® Fuga Outsole and OrthoLite. Below I have gone in-depth into each of the features on why I think this Danner Mountain 600 is a world-class boot for hiking especially in the weekend.
The material used to make the Danner Mountain 600 is suede upper. According to Danner, ‘these uppers are made from rich, thick and durable suede.’
This gives the boot a nice soft feel when you touch it. Also, the way the suede leather is designed makes the boot flexible to even bend. Some people may look at this boot and think that the leather makes the boot look old. But in reality, it’s exactly the opposite.
The suede upper with the old fashion eyelets, sticky outsole and a very soft midsole makes the boot look like late 60s mountaineering boots. And it’s great to see such material designed in such an old aesthetic way.
Waterproof And Breathable
The way the waterproof is made is kind of different from boots like Asolo Fugitive GTX or Vasque Monolith. The materials used are two different types. The first one is the Danner Dry. As you can tell from the name this lining material is made by Danner itself. It’s 100% waterproof and it keeps moisture out of the boot. This helps keep your feet dry and comfortable all day long. This way you don’t get sores or bruises on your feet.
Inside the boot there is a smooth and soft material. Again, it adds more comfort and cushioning to feet as you hike. The big advantage with this smooth and soft material is how big it is in size. This allows you to wear different hiking socks such as low-ankle socks or smartwool PHD outdoor light crew.
One of the key features that stands out from the boot is the lacing structure. I’m going to break the lacing structure into different parts to make it easy for you to understand its effectiveness.
The first part of the lacing system is the ten D-ring eyelets. These eyelets are at the front part of the boot. Five on each side. These D-ring are made in an old fashion which makes it very nice and it’s free-flowing to lace with. This is going to give you a lot of space to pass the laces through the boot at a very quick pace.
Next to the ankle section of the boot, there are four lacing hooks. Two on both sides. Again, these are old fashion and it kind of make the whole lacing eyelets look like late 60s mountaineering boots. These lacing hooks are going to give you a nice grip when you are tighting your laces up. Or even loosing them up.
At the middle of the tongue, there is a piece of shock cord to hold the laces down and make it look organized. This way the laces doesn’t loosen up whiles you are hiking on the trails.
Furthermore, these eyelets are hardware made, which is going to make it last very long. On top of that, the eyelets is going to take some time for it to break down. These old fashion D-ring blends and the lacing hooks at the top of the boot blends perfectly with the leather and gives it a classic look.
The toe box is quite different from normal hiking boots that tends to have hard rubberized toe box like Lowa Tibet GTX. The Danner Mountain 600 has a toe box that is made with the same sticky material like the outsole. It’s flexible and it is going to give you good protection when you hit your toes against a rock or stone.
The Outsole, Midsole, and Insole
Now lets take a closer look at the outsole, midsole and insole. The outsole of the boot is made of Vibram Fuga. This is high quality material and it’s durable as well.
The lugs underneath the boot are shaped in a triangle and all of them are put together independently. There are many benefits to this style of lugs. Firstly, they are self-adapting lugs which means they are going to provide good grip on either wet or dry surfaces.
This is because the outsole is very sticky and it’s going to stitch to the surface you are hiking on like glue. Therefore, I must warn you that you shouldn’t try to walk with this boot on the carpet or fluffy surfaces. This is because you are going to fall due to sticky of the outsole. Secondly, it’s going to give you a lot of traction either you are climbing or going down a steep hill. This way you don’t lose your balance easily.
The midsole is made of EVA which is very soft. This really blends with the sticky outsole and the whole leather. The midsole is going to give you comfort, cushioning, support and enhance your rebound on the trails. This way your feet doesn’t get tired easily. In addition to that, the midsole is durable and it’s not going to break down easily.
And lastly, it’s the insole. The insole is made of ortholite pad. This is going to give you nice comfort when you put your feet inside of the boot. Moreover, the ortholite pad is removable which gives you the chance to take it out and put different footbed of your choice.
The outsole, midsole and insole are beautifully made and they all work perfectly together to give you cushioning and comfort whiles you hike on the trails or if you are doing mounteering.
Sometimes I love to see different colours options when buying a hiking boot. And Danner Mountain 600 happens to be one of the boots that have varieties of colours to choose from. I’m sure you will like their colours available to choose from. They have got black, brown, dark brown, grey, walnut/green and sandy colour.
The great thing about having these colours option to select from, is how you can choose one of them that matches with your clothes. This can up lift your spirit and confident when you are hiking with matching clothes and boots. So make sure to take a look at each of the colour boot and select your favourite one.
My favourite colour of the boot is the black and that’s the image of it. I would love you guys to comment below and tell me what your favourite colours for this boot. I’m curious to see what you guys say below.
Height and Gusseted Tongue
The height of the boot is 4.5 and it’s lightweight. This makes it perfect to use for other activities like walking to the park with your dog. Or even wearing them like normal shoes.
There is a gusseted tongue which you will find it very useful. It will protect water from entering the boot up to the level of the tongue. This guarantee you that your feet wouldn’t get wet when you step into a pond for an example.
Fit and Size
The only drawback I could think about this boot is the fit and size. This boot is very lightweight and flexible. You can order the boot size to fit you tight like trainers or running shoes. Or you can order it to be a little bigger just to give you some room when you are hiking with it.
But my advice to you is to try this boot on for a couple minutes and see how it feels like. This will give you a clearer understanding as to what size to buy. This way you don’t waste your money buying the wrong size. But the good thing about the size is being able to wear with different hiking socks.
As we come to the conclusion about the Danner Mountain 600. It very obvious that there is a lot to like about this boot and in my opinion is a world-class boot. Everything that Danner has invested in making this boot shows the quality of the boot and how good it performs.
The suede leather makes the boot durable and at the same time flexible to wear. The Vibram outsole is very different from normal hiking boots due to the stickiness of it. It’s very creative from Danner because it is going to give you good balance and stability on the terrains. Furthermore, the outsole is capable of adapting to different surfaces like wet or dry conditions.
The lacing structure is well-constructed which is going to help you tigh your laces the way you want and at the same time keep it organized. And the midsole, kind of act like the meat between the sandwich. It makes the boot look very classic and gives it a lot of cushioning and support.
Like I said earlier, make sure to try this boot on before you buy it or order it. You really want to get a feel of how the boot will fit your feet and how comfortable it is to hike with it.
