My Rating: 4.8/5
Best Place To Buy: Amazon
In my last review, I discussed the Danner Mountain Light and how it is one of the best hiking boots in the markets for men. However, in today’s review, I will discuss the second version of the Danner Mountain and it’s called the Danner Mountain Light II.
This second version is similar to the first one with a lot of similar features. But there are different features that make the Danner Mountain Light II stands out from the first version. Also, I will discuss one of the big topics about this boot and it’s the price. The number one question that everyone asks about this boat is; it’s the price worth it. With that being said, let get into the review.
The Danner Mountain Light II is made of full-grain leather uppers. Using full-grain leather allows the boot to last for a very long time. This could mean using it for a decade. However, this can only happen when you take good care of the leather. One of the best ways I will advise you to take care of the material is to use the Danner Boot Dressing. This will help maintain the boot for a very long time.
Another reason why using full-grain leather for this boot is how it prevents the boots from cracking or revealing any natural imperfections on the boots. This way the boot last very long and it’s very comfortable when wearing it.
Waterproof And Breathable
One thing I personally like about this boot is how it is 100% waterproof and breathable. The Danner Mountain Light II has got Gore-Tex Liner within the boot just like the first version. This means you are guaranteed that your feet will stay dry when you are hiking in a wet condition, mud or even pond.
In addition, the Gore-Tex Liner inside the boot allows sweat and moisture to get out quickly. This is such a wonderful feature to have because it prevents your feet from getting blisters or small wounds. Since you are not going to have a lot of sweat and moisture in your boot for a long period, you could hike with the boot for many hours.
In the Danner Mountain Light review I made previously, I highlighted the fact that the boot is excellent at dealing with snow and cold weather conditions. However, I did say that it wouldn’t be a good idea to hike with it in the snow because it can feel very heavy as you hike with it. This same advice applies to the Danner Mountain Light II because it is heavy as well.
The lacing structure of Danner Mountain Light II is the same as the Danner Mountain Light. The lacing structure is very simple to lace with and at the same time very effective.
Firstly, the Danner Mountain Light II has got five D-ring on each side of the boot. The sizes of each D-ring is about 25mm in size. These sizes are bigger than normal lacing holes and it’s very helpful to have. This is because you can put your laces through the holes with ease and tight the knot.
And secondly, there are four lacing hooks at the top of the boot next to the tongue. Again, these hooks are a bit bigger than normal lacing hooks in a hiking boot. Nonetheless, these hooks are the finishing touch to the lacing structure. The reason being is that it allows you to tighten the laces the way you like it to be tight. Or you could tighten the laces to the point of the tongue or not.
When it comes to lacing structure between Danner Mountain Light II and the Danner Mountain Light. There are two main differences.
The Danner Mountain Light II normally comes in two laces. If you buy the black version, then you will use the black laces. But if you buy the dark brown version, then you will use the green laces. The Danner Mountain Light on the other hand normally uses the golden and brown laces.
The second difference is how the lacing hooks look. The Danner Mountain Light II appears darker in terms of appearance. Whiles the Danner Mountain Light has a silver looking appearance and shiny.
One big advantage that Danner Mountain Light II has over Danner Mountain Light is the choice of colours available you can choose from.
With the Danner Mountain Light II, there are two colours available. The first one comes in dark brown with green laces. And the second one comes in black colour with black laces. If you are someone who fancies colours when it comes to hiking boots, then you will enjoy wearing the Danner Mountain Light II.
There is nothing fancy about the toe box. The full-grain leather has already covered the whole of the toe box making it unseparated. This way it stops you from getting any serious injury if you were to hit your feet against a solid rock.
The Outsole, Midsole, and Insole
When it comes to the outsole, midsole, and insole they are perfectly made just like the Danner Mountain Light. Except for the insole which is made a little different. Nevertheless, all three parts are brilliantly well-designed.
Firstly, the outsole of the boot is made of Vibram Kletterlift. Vibram is the leading company at designing quality outsoles for footwear. So seeing Danner Hiking Boots Company use Vibram as their outsole tells you that they mean business. The Vibram Kletterlift is specifically designed to give you comfort as you hike with the boot.
On top of that, it’s durable which means the outsole takes time before it worn out. Even if they wore out, you can get it re-crafted either at their store or a good shoe marker.
The heel section of the outsole gives you good shock absorption and the rubber compound gives you good traction and stability as you hike on the hills or mountains. Not only that, but it also supports you as you hike on wet and dry surfaces.
With the outsole, there are small dots which are called carrarmato lugs. Again, these carramato lugs give you extra grip and traction as you hike on a steep hill and tricky surfaces like scree.
And lastly, there are angled lugs underneath the outsole. These angled lugs are self-cleaning and they are very good at cleaning things such as debris underneath your boots. Also, these angled lugs will give you good stability when you are hiking.
I’m not really sure what was used to make the midsole. But what I can say with certainty is that it’s well-designed and it can last with long.
The insole of the boot is made of danner airthotic. The danner airthotic is a half-length shape which is molded with polyurethane. It looks strange but it provides you with great ankle and heel support. This really makes your legs more comfortable as you hike with them.
Don’t get me wrong, some people don’t like the danner airthotic. They may find it a little uncomfortable wearing them so they would change the outsole and use a different one like Nike free run insole. I guess it comes down to personal preference.
Fit and Size
This boot comes in a wider or medium size. This means it’s likely to fit people who have wider or broader feet. Therefore, people who have such feet will enjoy wearing them.
The Danner Mountain Light II has a unique tongue. The tongue is attached to the ankle which gives you comfort and more warm as you hike. Furthermore, you can open the top of the tongue to allow air to flow inside your feet and it refreshes.
When it comes to re-craftable. It’s just like Danner Mountain Light whereby you can go and get it remade when some part of the boot has worn out or it’s destroyed. This can be done at Danner’s stores or ask a good shoe-maker to fix it.
Is The Boot Worth The Price???
Finally, we have come to the point that some of you have been waiting for. Is the boot worth the price? Let’s be honest and face the truth, the price of this boot is astronomical. I mean who on earth is willing to spend £400 – £500 on this boot. Looking at the features and analyzing them, we could say the boot deserve that price tag.
This is because it has strong leather material, Gore-Tex lining which provides waterproof and breathable, and Vibram Kletterlift outsole which gives you good absorption and support as you hike with them. Another key factor of this boot is how you can get it re-made if let say the outsole wore out. Therefore, it makes this boot last even longer.
On the other hand, this boot comes in wider or medium size. This means it’s likely to fit people who have wider or broader feet. Another, disadvantage of this boot is how heavy it can feel on your feet. It can be a pain when hiking with them.
So I guess, I’m even having a hard time to decide if this boot is worth the price or not. It will be nice if you guys can share your thoughts on this topic in the comment section. I will be looking forward to reading your comment below.
As we come to the conclusion of this post about the Danner Mountain Light II review. It seems that this boot is well planned and designed to give hikers the best experience they want during their hiking trip. Ironically this boot is called light but it weighs heavy. Approximately this boot weighs 62 oz per pair according to Danner Hiking Boots. This boot is ideal for hiking in the mountains, hills or backpacking trips.
This boot has amazing features from strong leather material to Gore-Tex lining to the quality outsole, midsole, and insole. All these key features make the boot great to hike with them. On the other hand, the size and weight of the boot can be annoying wearing them.
Due to the heaviness of the boot. And the last thing that can put people off from buying this boot is the price. It will be great if Danner Hiking Boots and Amazon can reduce their prices.
