The Scarpa Manta Pro GTX is a perfect boot for hiking but it is typically used on the mountains. When it comes to mountaineering, the manta pro gtx is definitely on most hiker’s list of best hiking boots. What I also enjoy about Scarpa company is how they keep up-grading their footwear to suit their customers and getting ahead in the market.
One of the amazing things that they have being able to do over the years is how they managed to reduce the weight of the Manta Pro GTX by ten percent. They have managed to do this by the help of the grace sole unit.
The upper material of this boot is designed with suede and synthetic. Suede is a material made from animals such as deer, pig and calf. However, how the suede leather comes out as tick depends solely on what kind of animal is used. For example, using a deep outer skin will make the suede leather very thick compared with using lamb skin. This is one of the main reason why this boot have a hard outer leather.
Synthetic on the other hand, is usually made out of cork leather. One of the key strengths of synthetic leather is how it is durable. This is why when suede and synthetic material is combine together to make a hiking boot, it can with-stand rainy condition and it is durable as well.
In terms of how Scarpa made this boot with suede and synthetic leather. They inject it with silicone which as a result helps with water resistance and stops the leather from getting wet. This is why the Manta Pro GTX is an excellent boot to use on the mountains where there are snow and rain everywhere.
Waterproof And Breathable
What makes this boot so good at dealing with water on the mountains and hills is how good the lining is made. The lining is made of gore-tex membrane. Gore-tex membrane is made in a unique way to repel liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through.
This really makes the boot breathable and waterproof. Furthermore, it very good at dealing with snow as well and keeping your foot at the right temperature as you hike. This is why people who do mountaineering or long hikes likes to put Manta Pro GTX on top of their hiking boots list.
I think one of the weakness of this boot is their choices of colour selection. At the moment they only have one colour to choose from and it is the navy. However, the way Scarpa has designed the boot makes it very attractive to wear despite having only one colour choice.
The Manta Pro GTX has a slick speed lacing system. What that means that you can lace the boots at a very fast pace and cross it how you want. The layout of the lacing holes is similar to the Scarpa hiking boots for men.
The Manta Pro GTX has got four speed lace hooks at the top of the boot near the tongue. This gives you the choice to lace how you prefer either diagonal or straight lacing.
Secondly, there are six silver loose hooks. These holes look small and it can be difficult to pull the laces through and tie them up. But once you manage to pull the laces through the holes, it gets stick and secure for you to tie them up.
Also, the small loose hooks are very good at maintaining the laces from getting loose. This way you don’t have to re-tie the laces over and over again.
Thirdly, there is another type of lacing hook at the middle of the boot and it’s a bit loose. However, this one is bigger than the six silver hooks. It allows the boot to shape comfortably with your foot as you lace the boot and give you good grip once you lace them.
With the toe box, I really find it very interesting and fascinating. This is because unlike most hiking boots that have a rubber at the exact point of the toe box, this one is slightly different.
The toe box for this one is covered with rubber which goes around the whole boot. This is very clever because it adds some form of stylish to the boot and it also protects your feet when you hit a rock.
Outsole, Midsole and Insole
As I said earlier in this review, the weight of the boot has being reduced drastically because of the sole. The outsole of the boot is made with vibram. If you don’t know what that is, vibram is the leading edge of creating the best rubber outsoles for footwear like hiking boots. And using vibram for the Manta Pro GTX is an excellent way of giving the boot a good grip on the trails. On top of that, this boot has a very aggressive exterior which is good at dealing with conditions such as snow, ice, rocky surfaces and scree.
Another thing that I love in-terms of the outsole is the aggressive lugs. When you are hiking with this boot either on the mountains or hills, it will clear all the dirt, mud, snow or grass out of the outsole and keep it clean. The aggressive lugs is good at making the sole look neat however, it’s important to do your job diligently by cleaning the boots thoroughly after every hike. This way you can maintain the boots and use it for a long time.
The midsole is made of pro-fibre xt 20. I don’t personally know why Scarpa used the pro-fibr xt 20 for the midsole but I got to say it is a smart strategy and move from. The reason why I say that is because it makes the manta pro gtx super comfortable to wear and you don’t have any worries with your feet as you hike long distances.
And lastly, the insole of the boot is made with pentax precision xt. This is to give you smoothness and extra comfort as you wear the boot and hike with them. This way it prevents your feet from getting sore and blisters.
Another cool feature about the manta pro gtx is how it has a crampon compatible. The crampon is rated as B2 and it has a ledge at the back of it. This tells us that this boot can take up on either flexible or semi mounteering crampon. This shows that it will give you a good stability and grip as you hike or climb slippery surfaces.
Fit And Size
In terms of fitting and size they have made a slightly changes to the fit by using DL last. It simply means that this boot is capable of fitting your feet either you have a large or narrow feet.
As we come to the conclusion of this post about Manta Pro GTX. I believe if you are the kind of hiker who loves to hike on mountains where there are snow and rain then the manta pro gtx is the perfect boots that you need. In addition, this boot is primarily designed for long journeys and it’s good on tricky surfaces as well. The outsole, insole and midsole of the boots are a masterclass finish. This really gives you such comfort and warm as you hike through the snow on the mountains.
One weakness of this boot is the limited colour choose. For me personally, I would love Scarpa to bring in some different colours for this boot such as orange, blue, brown and black. This will really attract a lot of customers to the product and increase Scarpa’s revenue as a result.
This really makes us question if, the Manta Pro GTX is the best boot for hiking on the mountains or even on the hills? In my opinion this boot deserve five stars rating because it is excellent at performing on mountains and hills. Believe me, this boot will surely not let you down and you will enjoy wearing the boots very much.
