Vasque Monolith Review – The Perfect Hiking Boot For A Day Hike

Vasque Monolith Overview

Vasque MonolithProduct: Vasque Monolith

My Rating: 4/5

Price: £195.19

Best Place To Buy: Amazon

The Vasque monolith is by far one of the lightest boots to use when hiking compared with other heavy hiking boots such as Manta Pro GTX, Scarpa Sl Activ or Asolo TPS 520 GV. The Vasque monolith has comfort and protection at its core design. This is what makes this lightweight boots special from other boots. This is to make the hiking trip more fun and enjoyable for hikers. Below I have broken down each of the features in-depth and how hikers enjoy this lightweight boot.

Material Used

The upper material of Vasque monolith is 1.8mm waterproof leather, abrasion-resistant mesh. If I break down the whole of this material down, we can see that the boot is very light due to the 1.8mm weight. This is a feature that hikers love having in their boots especially day hikers because it gives your feet the freedom of less weight to hike freely any without striction. On top of that, if you have this type of lightweight boot, it will allow you to hike long distances in a day without getting tired.

Secondly, the material used to make this hiking boot makes the boot waterproofable. This is true to some extent however the waterproof material used in the Vasque monolith is not very strong enough to protect your feet from staying dry if you are hiking in heavy rain. Personally speaking, I think this Vasque needs to improve this area of the boot to make it even strong and deal with all sorts of rain.

And lastly, the material is made of abrasion resistant mesh. The abrasion resistant mesh is an excellent material to have in this hiking boot. This is because it makes the boot very comfortable and smooth to wear. Hence, that’s why comfort is at the core of this boot design.

Waterproof And Breathable

This boot has ultra-dry waterproof system in-embed in it. From one perspective, it makes your feet very breathable to wear and it makes it comfortable. However, the ultra-dry waterproof system can deal with a small amount of water but it cannot deal with heavy rain. This means your feet and boots are not that safe when hiking in heavy rain because your boots could end up being soak. This is not very good because you could easily destroy this hiking boot.

Lacing Structure

The lacing structure is one of the key strengths of this lightweight hiking boot. The Vasque monolith has a speed lacing structure. The way it is designed and how it is structured is very simple but it is effective at the same time. This is how the speed lacing is made of.

Firstly, at the bottom of the boot, there are two round metal holes. This allows you to pull the laces through the round holes with ease. Also, the round holes allow you to lace either from the top or underneath it. This way it gives you preference as to what style of lacing you want to lace.

Secondly, there are four rounded holes at each side of the boot. These are made of the same material which is used to design the boot. This is very creative from Vasque Company because it makes the boot more fashionable to wear. This way the eight rounded holes blends perfectly with the boot. Moreover, the rounded holes are very strong and it gives you more stability when lacing your boot. This way you wouldn’t have your laces coming off all the times as you hike.

Furthermore, there is another rounded hole of the same material at the middle of the tongue. This is to give you extra security when you place your boot and it gives you that firmness that you need when you want to tie the laces together. In addition to that, the middle lace hole on the tongue keeps the tongue stable and centered on your foot. This really makes your foot comfortable as you hike with the boot.

And lastly, the Vasque monolith has got two sturdy metal hardware at the top of the boot. This is to give you that lock in secure fit at the top when you finish lacing the boot.

Toe Box

The toe box can be controversial for some hikers. This is because if you are someone who has a wider foot you may experience some sort of discomfort with the toe box due to how small it is. Also, you could experience some sort of pressure from side to side of the boot. This could really make your feet uncomfortable to wear.

On the other hand, if you have a small foot you will enjoy wearing them because the toe box can make your feet very comfortable and warm as you hike through the trails. I guess the toe box is more down to personal preference and how you want your feet to feel as you hike.

The Outsole, Midsole, and Insole

The outsole of this boot is designed specifically by Vasque. It has got multi-directional lugs on the outsole. This is very good at dealing with conditions such as snow, shedding, and mud. The multi-directional lugs have a good spacing which is very good at clearing all these conditions out of the boot and tries to keep it neat at all time. On top of that, the multi-directional lugs give you stability, balance, and comfort as you hike through the tough conditions.

The midsole of this lightweight is molded with EVA. EVA which stands for Ethylene-vinyl acetate has good properties such as giving the boot low temperature, stress-crack resistance, and good barrier properties. This is nice to have inside the midsole because it delivers the comfort of a running shoe and a TPU midfoot shank creates the stability needed for technical trails.

And lastly, the insole of the boot is made of dual density EVA. This is to give you all day comfort with molded polyurethane materials underneath it. This also gives you a lot of shock absorption and energy as you hike. Furthermore, since the dual density EVA used in this boot is of higher density. It gives you more control and comfort over the boot as you hike.

Colour Selection

This boot comes in two different colours. They are black/chili pepper and magnet/white. From my perspective, I think these colours that Vasque chose to design this boot is fantastic. This is because each of the colours matches with the materials perfectly and it makes it more stylish and fashionable to wear.

This is a good strategy from Vasque because young men from this generation will love purchasing such lightweight hiking boot. Furthermore, since the colours blend perfectly with each other, you can even wear them as normal shoes and walk with them to do your normal routines such as walking to the park or going to work with them.

Conclusion

As we come to the conclusion of this post about Vasque monolith lightweight hiking boot. It seems that this boot is ideal for day hiking or hiking with a lighter pack. This is because it doesn’t have strong features to deal with long distance hikes. However, the great thing about this boot is how it can deal with snow, mud, dirt and some water. This shows that you can wear them anytime and anywhere without worrying if it’s going to get damaged by serious weather conditions.

I believe some of the key strengths of this boot are the lacing structure, the selection of colours used for the design and how it is breathable. All these key features make the boot very comfortable to wear them and gives you stability as you hike with them.

On another hand, some of the weakness of this boot is the toe box and the material used. I know the toe box is a controversial topic, however, I included it as a weakness of this boot is because it can discourage hikers who have larger feet from purchasing this boot. Simply because they may feel that the toe box could make their feet uncomfortable as they hike. It will be a great idea to see Vasque Company make some few adjustments to the toe box and expand the side of the boot a little bigger.

I think the material is nice to use for the Vasque monolith boot because it blends the colors with the laces. However, the issue with this material is that it is not strong enough to deal with heavy rain and the boot could end up being soak in water.

Apart from these weaknesses, I still think that this lightweight hiking boot is fantastic to wear with and hike with it. If you take good care of this boot and maintain how it looks, it could last for a very long time.

I hope you have really enjoyed reading this post on Vasque monolith review. If you have any questions or thoughts on the Vasque monolith, please do not hesitate to leave me a comment below. I will reply as soon as I can!

And as always have a fantastic and wonderful hiking trip. ????

  1. Hello Kuu,

Thanks very much for this article and the honest review of the product. As someone who lives in a country that experiences a lot of rain, the water resistance of a boot is incredible important as wet feet can spell disaster for ones hike and comfort.

In your review, the boot is listed as waterproof and breathable but the review also states that the waterproof capabilities of the boot are one of its weak points. Does that mean that the manufacturers are overselling this boot for something that it is not designed for?

The boot is definitely not on the lower end of the price scale and I wanted to know how this compares to a product such as the Merrell Moab 2 Mid GTX which is half the price of the Vasque?

    Thanks

    Rich

    • Hello Richard,

Great to hear that you found my review helpful and useful. In my opinion, I think the boot’s waterproof is one of average. This simply means that, it can cope with light rain however when you use it in heavy rain then the boot is likely to get soak. For me the waterproof of this boot is not very high compared with other hiking boots such as Asolo TPS 520 or Manta Pro GTX. These types of hiking boots are exceptionally made to keep your feet dry even in heavy rain.

That’s a good observation from you Richard. One reason why the Vasque monolith boot is more expensive than the Merrell Moab 2 Mid GTX is due to durability. Vasque monolith can last for a very long time when taken good care of compared with Merrell Moab 2 Mid GTX.

Another reason is the Vasque monolith boots don’t wear out quickly like Merrell Moab 2 Mid GTX. This means you can hike with them without wearing the outsole or the multi-directional lugs quickly. I hope you find these answers useful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to give me a shout. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  2. I think this is a great review because we must pay attention on the shoes and hiking boots we wear and it’s quality. I like to go running and hiking with my friends but I don’t use high-quality shoes. Vasque monolith boot looks very powerful and I think that it is worth the price. I will buy one soon, as winter is coming.

    • Hello Daniel,

I’m pleased to hear that you enjoy my review on Vasque monolith. I think you are going to love wearing them in winter because this lightweight boot has multi-directional lugs that can deal with the snow. This will surely give you stability as you hike with this boot. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  3. Thanks for this Kuu. A quick advice for those looking to hike. Make sure to get used to the boot before going for a hike. Maybe walk with it a little bit and wear it for a couple of weeks before going for a hike. I remember I was dumb for having just bought the boot and going for a trek without having it worn once. I got so many blisters and by the end of the trek, I couldn’t even walk properly. It’s sometimes easy to forget, but just getting used to it helps a lot. Your boot recognizes your shoe structure and that’s what makes blisters go away.

    • Hello Parmi,

I think you sum up everything perfectly. I hope other people can learn from your mistake when choosing the right hiking boot to hike with. Wearing the wrong hiking boot can really make your hiking trip miserable because it will make your feet very uncomfortable, get sore and blisters as you hike on the trails.

Vasque monolith is one of those hiking boots that needs testing before hiking with them. Some people with wide feet may have a hard time hiking with the boot because of how small the toe box is and how small the width are. Whiles people with small feet will enjoy them.

So it is very important for people to test them out before hiking with them on the trails. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. We really appreciate it. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  4. Hey Kuu, great article on hiking boots!

I live in the country and hike fairly frequently with my friends and sometimes with my dog. The right hiking boot is a must for me, and I liked the sound of these boots until I saw they aren’t the best for those with wide feet.

Unfortunately, I’ve had problems in the past with my foot being too wide for my shoes, and it isn’t pleasant. Is there any boot similar in quality that you would recommend that will accomadate my wide feet?

    Thanks,

    Joey

    • Hello Joey,

It’s great to hear from another hiker, who loves to hike often. For me I will personally recommend hiking boots such as Asolo TPS 520 GV, Scarpa Sl Activ and Scarpa Hiking Boots For Men.

These hiking boots are big in size and I am confident that your wide feet will fit them. I hope you find these recommendations useful. If you have any further questions, please feel free to give me a shout. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

    Thank you,

    Nick.

  6. Everything you’ve described about the boot sounds wonderful and we were on the verge of getting it. However, there’s only one problem, and that’s the fact that my husband’s foot is wider. You did mention that there would be some discomfort while using it because of the slim design of the shoe.

In this instance, is there any other hiking boot that you can recommend that is comparable to the Vasque Monilith, but that will also accomodate a wider foot? Thanks in advance!

    • Hey Reyhana,

Lovely to see that you enjoyed the Vasque monolith review. Since your husband has a wider feet, I will personally recommend these hiking boots. Scarpa Hiking Boots, Asolo TPS 520 GV and Scarpa Sl Activ. These are boots are big in size and they are extremally comfortable to wear. I hope your husband like one of these hiking boots.

If not feel free to give me a shout and I will show you a different one. All the best. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  7. Thank you for an honest and thorough review of the Vasque monolith lightweight hiking boot. Especially, thank you for being honest about the toe box as I have a wide foot.

The boots sound very good for day hiking as being lightweight and durable with the great lacing structure. I like that it is made with real leather and the mesh where necessary for comfort and durability.

I think these boots would be a great investment as they would probably last a very long time, but my wide foot may not agree with the toe box.

    • Hello Alexander,

I’m pleased to hear that you really enjoyed reading my review. The Vasque monolith is specifically designed for day hiking or lighter pack. In addition, this lightweight boot has comfort and durability at it’s core design. This means your feet will experience a since of comfort as you hike on short hiking trips.

Absolutely, this kind of boot is worth investing if you are the type of hiker who loves day hikes or short hiking trips.

In terms of size, I think you can get the perfect size that fit you. This boot comes in various sizes. From 7 to 12. I will encourage you to give any of the sizes a try before you purchase the boot. I hope you find these answers useful. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  8. Hey there! Thanks for sharing this hiking boot. I’ve been looking for a comfortable, lightweight shoe for hiking. Do you know if this shoe comes Narrow? It’s funny because me and my hubby have exactly the same size foot and narrow but it’s so hard to find hiking boots that we like.

    • Hello Davis,

I think the Vasque monolith is the perfect hiking boot that you are looking for. It comes in narrow size as well and they can be comfortable if your feet fit perfectly with the boot. I am confident that you hubby will enjoy wearing them as will. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  9. I have been looking for potential hiking boots for a while now but they all seem so heavy; it’s great to come across a lightweight hiking boot that offers the same benefits as the others.

Although the material is waterproof, it won’t hold up in really heavy rain? Is this only the case for this particular shoe or is this true for other hiking boots too? Do you think this disadvantage is enough to justify not buying or is it still worth it?

    • Hello Danny,

It’s great to see you again. I’m confident that you will enjoy wearing the Vasque monolith because it is lightweight, durable and perfect for a day hike or lighter pack.

I think you shouldn’t get discourage from buying this boot due to how insufficient the material is not good at dealing with heavy rain. However, it can cope with less rain or drops of water. This is only the case for this particular hiking boot because other boots like Asolo TPS 520 GV are excellent at dealing with heavy rain.

I don’t think this weakness of the boot is not enough to stop people from buying it. You got to also remember that this boot has strong features such as the outsole, midsole, insole, design and the lacing structure. All these qualities makes it great to wear and hike with them on a day hike. If you have any further questions, please feel free to give me a shout. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  10. Thanks for the review, very thorough. Could you recommend a boot that is wider or that allows different sizes for the ball of your foot kind of like how Birkenstock does. I don’t prefer boots that have the toe box because it does rub when walking downhill. I trust your expertise and await any suggestions, thank you in advance.

    • Hey Lev,

Lovely to hear that you enjoyed the review. Looking at your preference, I feel that boots such as Lowa Tibet GTX will surely suit you. For the Lowa Tibet GTX, it has a rubber toe box that goes around the boot.

This is quit unique from other hiking boots and how the rubber toe box is designed. This will help you when you are hiking down-wards and it will protect your feet from getting serious injury when you hit on a rock.

In terms of boots size the ideal boots are Asolo TPS 520 GV, Manta Pro GTX and Scarpa Sl Activ. These kinds of boots can fit anyone either you have a small or big feet. If you have any further questions, please feel free to give me a shout. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  11. I am a big fan of hiking up mountains. I have enjoyed many walk in the peak district, for example Kinder Scout and I remember on one occasion the front of my walking boot was falling apart. The front of the shoe looked like the mouth of a crocodile, and every now and then I would trip up. This is of course rather dangerous when you are walking along sheer edges. It is definitely a task to be taken seriously – finding the right footwear for you.

£195.19 is quite expensive for most people, but if you are a regular hiker, and you are going to get your money`s worth, then it is an investment to make. What I like about the look of these particular boots is that they are both breathable and waterproof, which is a very hard combination to achieve. This means that these boots are good for summer walking as well as winter walking.

    • Hello Mark,

It’s wonderful to see another hiker who loves to hike regularly. It’s great to hear your hiking experience and I hope other hikers will learnt from it and use it in their hiking trips.

What you are saying is right on the money. Most people think that investing that amount of money in a hiking boot is pointless and expensive.

However if you think about it, you are protecting yourself from future injuries and having to deal with uncontrol circumstance like snow blizzards. A quality hiking boot like Vasque monolith will surely take good care of you.

Thanks for sharing your hiking experience with us Mark. We truly appreciate it. And as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  12. Your review comes right in time, as I trashed my old hiking boots last Saturday. I’m not a heavy hiker, but when I’m on the trail, I like to have reliable boots. The Vasque Monoliths look like good boots. I especially like, how it is lightweight and breathable.

I always dealt with heavy hiking boots and they can really pull you down the longer you go. Thanks for honeslty mentioning that the waterproof material will not stand heavy raining. You have to take this into consideration then.

    • Hello Flex,

Nice to hear that my review on Vasque monolith came just in time for you. I’m sure you are going to love wearing them and it will last for a very long time if you manage to maintain it. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.

  13. My husband and brothers love this type of shoes. I personally, like this for my hubby too since it is very light, as you said. After the accident and surgeries of his left leg, he can’t wear his beloved boots anymore.

There are times that he tries to wear them but his feet bear the burden of heavy shoes and ends up hurting his leg. So I always search for good light shoes for him. Thanks to this review that I might consider this pair of boots. This is a good Christmas gift for him. Thank you.

    • Hey Eli,

It’s wonderful to see you again. The Vasque monolith are perfect for people who have had an accident or surgeries on their legs. This is because this boot is lightweight and it doesn’t put a lot of pressure and weight on your feet as you hike.

On top of that, it will be great for your husband because he can use this boot for day hiking instead of long distances hike. I agree with you. This boot will be the perfect Christmas gift that he needs. Thanks for stopping by and as always have a fantastic hiking trip.
